The Sprouting Acorn
This Substack Account is Being Renamed Today
Beginning today, I’ve renamed this Substack account.
“The Sprouting Acorn” seems a fitting metaphor for where I am in my life. Plus, as I wrote earlier today, I’ve grown weary of labels.
I must grow in new directions. I intend to grow “Spiritward”—a concept I will elaborate upon in future posts.
For now, it is enough for you to understand that I am like a sprouting acorn.
I am not yet “an oak,” but I have also ceased being a dormant acorn—hence “A sprouting acorn.”
I don’t know much about this liminal space of being between an acorn and an oak, but I do know the first thing a sprouting acorn does is direct the bulk of its energy into establishing its roots.
Only after it has gained a firm foundation does it then move upwards and burst forth as a tender oak sapling.
I will leave you with a beautiful quote from Anais Nin that has been resonating in my heart for some time:
“And the day came when the risk to stay tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
It is time for me to blossom into something other than I am. To do so, I must first sprout downward and draw from a deeper wisdom.

Can't wait to see what comes next!
I love this, Jack! It is a liminal time of the year, as it should be, I think! Time to withdraw and hold the fires close. You might know the name of the Waldorf school we started in Charleston was called The Acorn School for those very reasons .
